The first black cowboys, at least commercially Nat Love and Bill Pickett exemplified the beginnings of style, more specifically, vintage style. After the civil war, African slaves traveled west looking for work to fit in their new American citizenship, working as farm hands and ranch maintenance. Through these jobs they acquired second hand clothing and tools from the ranch or plantation owners. They herded cattle, harvested crops, retrieve debts, and even fought Indians in passing through communal lines.  Each Jean in this collection are individually different to display the foundational look of the black cowboys, explaining the different places they sourced second hands items to start a new beginning in American society. In recent times, there has been a surge in popularity in vintage items, and I wanted to commission these jeans through Taylor Simmons to show the power in black ingenuity, and also saying it’s not the clothes but the person that add an attracting allure to any item. Wether that be an old pair of jeans or a plantation.

With Love, Eshú
